Ever felt like the person on the treadmill or bike next to you is trying to out do you? Well your hunch isn't far off because they are! Everyday at your gym there are many 1 on 1 cardio competitions going on. Its a battle to see if you can run faster, longer, with more incline, and make it look the easier. First person to hit the 'cooldown' loses! I am not sure what it is about those cardio machines, but they bring out the eye of the tiger in everyone.
Just notice how when you bump up your speed the person next to you bumps up their speed. Going for a little increase of incline, well so are they. When you finally realize you are engaged in a cardio competition you retaliate by boosting your strides per minute or take your hands off the handles of the elliptical. Its basically like a hand of poker, seeing if you can continue to increase the ante and one up your opponent.
Some people take this to the extreme by taking a sip of water or wiping themselves with their towel when you do. If a person uses the machine right next to you and there are a number of machines open elsewhere, it can be a hint that this person wants to rumble.
So next time you are on a piece of cardio equipment, look to your right, look to your left and then give them the look like they are all going down!

Great post. I always feel like this when I step on the treadmill next to someone else.
It somehow completes your workout when the other guy has to slow down first.
It is SO true.
At least, whenever I get on the treadmill...
