I was sitting in the lounge of my gym working on my computer and from my right I heard,
'Can you tell me if this is good for me?'
It was one of our members and PT clients and to hide his identity we'll call him, Bevin.
Bevin walked over to me carrying an Oh Yeah! Natural Bar that he chose from the gym's front desk.
'I'm about to train with my trainer in 10 minutes, should I have this?'
To be honest, when I see Oh Yeah! I immediately think, Oh No!
I'm always skeptical of food and beverage products with cheesy names.
Coincidentally enough I also had a bar with me at that exact moment, it was a KIND Bar.
We swapped bars and I told him the first thing I do is look at the ingredient list.
When choosing a bar, pick the one with the least amount of ingredients.
His bar had 21, mine had 7.
Next work backwards up the nutritional facts and look at fiber, protein, fat, and calories.
Try to pick the bar with the most about of fiber.
His bar had 2g, mine had 4 grams.
I also told Bevin that no bar or shake can beat whole food, the fact that you can actually see the nuts and fruit in the KIND Bar made it a better choice as well.
Suddenly I looked over at our refrigerator and saw that we can small cups of fruit.
HAVE THAT!
It's perfect, sure its got less protein and good fat than the Oh Yeah! Bar, but it's...
1. About 150 calories less than the bar
2. Whole real food
3. Light and easy to digest 10 minutes before a workout
4. Packed with vitamins and fiber
And that did it, Bevin put back the bar and grabbed the fruit cup.
All I could say was...
Ooooh Yeeeeah! (with a cheesy head nod and one raised eyebrow)
